This study explores the Representation of Sexual Identities in Nollywood filmic text. Queer is an umbrella term for gays, lesbian, transgender, bisexual and individuals who are not heterosexual or cisgender. Homosexuality is regarded as an enormous taboo in Nigeria and forbidden in action and in discussion. To analyze how sexual identities are been represented in Nigeria, we must look at a medium of representation, and this study will make use of films, hence Nollywood. It is important to state that Nollywood is the biggest film industry in Africa. The way we perceive the messages embedded in these movies plays a huge role on how we understand and navigate issues in life. As humans, change is constant and if we keep seeing the same pattern of information daily, it is normal for us to make it our norm either consciously or unconsciously. In the 21st century, the industry needs to look towards new realistic dimensions and subjects. This area of study will be a good addition to ‘Media and the Future’.
It is necessary to push the bounds of thinkable thoughts by asking questions. Questions that people are either too afraid to ask, or feel should not even be on ground for discussions. This paper explores the qualitative approach with the use of textual analysis. This paper looks at three Nollywood films and how they represent queer identities. The selected Nollywood films are, October 1st (2014), Hell or High Water (2016) and Finding Hubby (2022).
